Pumice Design / Interactive 3D

Interactive 3D.

Golden Bay / Aotearoa New Zealand

Worlds that run in the browser: scenes that move with the scroll and answer the pointer — interactive stories, product configurators, landing pages nobody forgets — tuned to run on a laptop and a phone. From Golden Bay, Aotearoa New Zealand, for people anywhere.

What
Real-time 3D on the web: WebGL and three.js scenes, scroll-driven film and interaction.
For
Interactive stories, product configurators and landing pages nobody forgets — built into your site, or standing alone.

Worlds that run in the browser.

Scenes that move with the scroll and answer the pointer, like the experience on this site.

Interactive stories, product configurators, landing pages nobody forgets — built into your site, or standing alone, and tuned to run on a laptop and a phone.

What you get

  1. WebGL and three.js scenes
  2. Scroll-driven film and interaction
  3. Tuned to run on a laptop and a phone
  4. Built into your site, or standing alone

A painted walk.

For a retreat for women in medicine, a way to arrive first: down through the canopy and along a track, the scroll the only thing moving you.

Ten lines of copy are spread along it, each reaching full ink as it crosses the middle of the screen. Integrated graphics and phones get the same forest as a desktop — lighter models and a three-quarter render scale, but the same forest.

On data saver, without WebGL 2, or on a software renderer, the canvas removes itself and the walk is ten lines on paper: not a fallback, a different edit of the same piece.

The case study: Align Retreats ↗Take the walk (opens in a new tab) ↗

  • 247 mof track, from the canopy to the forest floor
  • 41,820plants, sown by rule rather than by hand
  • 10lines of copy, and an ending
A tree fern and dark shrubs beside a pale track, tall trunks fading into mist.
On the track, a third of the way in.
The walk on a phone: mossy boulders in the foreground, tall trunks in mist.
The same forest on a phone, at 390 wide.

Our own front page is made the same way: the words and the pictures first, the 3D drawn over them, and the page complete without it.

The Thread — Pumice / Experiment 001, on our front page. Here, a still.

Why Pumice.

A small, independent studio in Golden Bay, Aotearoa: small on purpose.

  1. Tuned for a phone

Tuned to run on a laptop and a phone: on Align Retreats, integrated graphics and phones get the same forest as a desktop card.

  2. Words first

The words and the pictures come first, the 3D draws its scenes over them, and the page reads complete without it.

  3. Asked, not assumed

On Align Retreats, sound is offered, never assumed — and never offered at all to anyone who has asked for reduced motion.

  4. The same hands

Designed, built and rendered by the same hands, from the first sketch to the last frame — and you watch it grow.

  5. One fixed quote

One quote for the whole job, agreed in writing before anything is built, in NZD or AUD.

How it goesNZD or AUD

After you write.

Nothing is built before there is one quote for the whole job, agreed in writing.

Every project is quoted per project, in full, before it starts: one fixed quote for the whole job, in NZD or AUD, depending on where you are.

  1. Discover

We listen first: what you have, who it is for, and what would make it work. No pitch theatre.

  2. Define

One clear direction, and one quote for the whole job, agreed in writing before anything is built.

  3. Create

Designed, built and rendered by the same hands, and you watch it grow.

  4. Refine

Launch is the middle, not the end: we measure, tune, and keep it fast.

Questions.

Before a project starts.

  1. Will it run on a phone?

Yes: it is tuned to run on a laptop and a phone. On Align Retreats, phones and integrated graphics get the same forest as a desktop, with lighter models and a three-quarter render scale.

  2. What happens on a device that can’t run it?

The page still reads. On data saver, without WebGL 2, or on a software renderer, Align’s walk removes its canvas and is ten lines on paper — not a fallback, a different edit of the same piece.

  3. Can it go into the site we already have?

Yes: real-time 3D can be built into your site, or stand alone.

  4. What is it built with?

WebGL and three.js. Align Retreats was built with Astro, three.js, GSAP, Lenis, Blender and glTF-Transform.

  5. How much does real-time 3D cost?

There are no list prices. Every project is quoted per project, in full, before it starts: one fixed quote for the whole job, in NZD or AUD, depending on where you are.

  6. What happens after I get in touch?

We listen first: what you have, who it is for, and what would make it work. No pitch theatre. Then one clear direction, and one quote for the whole job, agreed in writing before anything is built.
